A Year From Now, You Will Wish You Had Started Today

By Ava Naves, Principal

It was shortly before 6:00 am here in Vancouver. As I settled in my office for my morning reading on all-things online marketing, I came across this blog post by Seth Godin that I read a few years ago, and which stands true. Its last paragraph:

“We’re going to spend our entire future living in tomorrow—investing now, when it’s difficult, is the single best moment.”

That sentiment isn’t new. We’ve been encouraged countless times to “get on with it”, to not delay to tomorrow what can be done today. A while back I came across a quote in the same vein that has become one of my favourites:

“A year from now you will wish you had started today.”  — Karen Lamb

You and I know so well that this applies to many areas of our lives: finances (“start saving now”), fitness (“get to the gym if only for 30 minutes”), diet, and so on.

It also applies to the creation and application of digital marketing campaigns.

Since 2010, The Online Strategy House has been developing and implementing online marketing plans for clients in various spaces in Vancouver, British Columbia, as well as Alberta. Our portfolio includes an NGO, a governmental health organization, a recruitment firm, a wellness B2C small business, to name a few. Different clients with unique sets of objectives, and yet they share one commonality: the absolute need to initiate the implementation; the need to take that first step. And it can be daunting. You might know what that’s like.

But at the risk of stating the obvious, remember that your company’s online marketing plan will be of little benefit unless it’s actually deployed.

That’s why Seth Godin’s words resonated with me. Today, presuming that you have a strategy in your hands, that first step may be to:

  • Connect with your customers through a specific social media channel;
  • Write one blog post to help with your SEO;
  • Draft your next email newsletter;
  • Write a bank of tweets to publish at a later date.
  • Create an Instagram content calendar.

The list can go on, but this gives you some ideas.

I understand that it can be intimidating to launch a digital marketing campaign. So whenever I’m working with our clients, I make sure that The Online Strategy House develops and presents digital marketing strategy in a way that not only sets out the journey as feasible steps, but also gets our clients’ teams excited about the process.

It’s essential to have the buy-in from your C-suite, marketing team, and often even the IT staff. If you’re planning on using internal resources to deploy the online marketing strategy, their commitment will help ensure that the job gets done. If contractors are put in charge of the implementation, your company’s buy-in will support them as they execute the plan.

Remember to define if your company has the internal bandwidth to implement the strategy, or if you will need to call for reinforcements.  And if your current online marketing plan is a bit outdated and could use a review, contact us.

In the words of Eckhart Tolle:

“The power for creating a better future is contained in the present moment: You create a good future by creating a good present.”
